Superman has raised the ire of conservative pundits and bloggers by renouncing his American citizenship. In the most recent issue of Action Comics, he angers the government by taking part, nonviolently, in a giant protest in Tehran. In order to avoid an international incident, and because he’s tired of being associated with American foreign policy, he’s now decided to give up being the all-American Hero. This might not surprise many of us here, since it’s public knowledge that Superman is a Canadian (and Metropolis is based on Toronto). This mirrors much of what’s been going on with Marvel Comics in recent years, where Captain America has also, at various points, renounced America (becoming “the Captain“), gone after the Tea Party and led a war against the American government (in the “civil war”). Presumably, we can now add Superheroes to the list of “evil liberal elites” along with university professors and celebrities.
